3 MYTHS YOU MIGHT BELIEVE ABOUT PODCASTING 😫 M 3 MYTHS YOU MIGHT BELIEVE ABOUT PODCASTING 😫 Myth: You have to be good at tech to launch a podcast. Many people believe that in order to have a successful podcast, you have to be amazing at technology. You might think that you can’t launch if you don’t know all there is to know about microphones, mixers, boom arms, and gain. 😃 Truth: You can start a podcast without being a tech guru. You need to be willing to learn and start simple. As you learn and grow, you can get fancier with the tech if you want, or you can hire it out. The truth is, you don’t have to know everything to get started! 😫 Myth: You need to be famous or have a large following to have a successful podcast. You might think that you won’t be able to grow a podcast unless you’re already famous. You don’t have 10K followers on Instagram or a large email list… so how are you going to find people who want to listen to your show? ​ 😃 Truth: You need clarity around some key aspects of your podcast so that you can connect with your ideal listeners and grow an audience. If you create a strategy and strong foundation for your podcast from the start, it doesn’t matter how many followers you have. 😫 Myth: You need to have a huge amount of time or money to start a podcast. You may have heard podcasters share how much work a podcast is, or throw out numbers about how much time or money they invest in their show. And perhaps this holds you back. Or you might have so much going on in your life between managing clients, kids, and trying to survive 2020… that you can’t figure out how you’d have time to fit in a podcast. ​ 😃 Truth: Podcasting does take time and money, but you can decide what level of podcasting you are going to do. What do I mean by this? Well, there are many ways to host a podcast, and it doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. You don’t have to fit into a cookie cutter view of what podcasting is. If you have a passion to share a message, it can be done even if you have time or financial limitations. Truth: A podcast does take time and money, but it's possible to adjust your podcast according to your unique situation. You can be creative with how you do a podcast to make it fit with your life and business! For example, you don't have to follow the standard advice and publish a show once a week. To reduce your time and financial investment, you can do a podcast that is 2x a month, monthly, or you could do seasonal. There's no right or wrong; you just need to be willing to think outside the box and make sure your expectations are in line with your investment. REAL TALK ABOUT MY PODCASTING AND BIZ JOURNEY Whe REAL TALK ABOUT MY PODCASTING AND BIZ JOURNEY When I first got into the world of online business, I was drawn to the idea of creating courses and "passive" income. I learned the hard way that this wasn’t as easy as it appears. Then I entered into the world of being a service provider, and about 3 years ago, I started working with a client who had a podcast. This gave me invaluable first-hand experience in the podcasting world. Over the next few years, I dove deeper into the world of podcasting... by starting my own podcast and working with clients 1:1 to help them launch their own. I worked with the client on strategy, and my team and I did the implementation. But over the course of these past couple years, I've run into several women who wanted to launch a podcast, but weren't ready to hire a full team. And they may not have been ready to join one of the group programs I offered... They were more like me: they just wanted a clear path so they could get the podcast created quickly without sacrificing quality. So I keep coming back to this idea of creating a course. Something that simplifies the process of launching a podcast into doable steps, without overwhelming people with unnecessary extras. (continued in the comments)
Is podcasting the right content platform for you? Is podcasting the right content platform for you? If you’re leaning towards starting a podcast but you’re not quite sure if it’s the right option, there are 3 practical ways to determine if it's a fit. I shared about these in episode 19 of the Christian Woman Business Podcast, but here's a brief overview. 1. Become an avid podcast listener. When you listen to podcasts, you’ll figure out if this is the right format for you. If you love them it may help you to know that this would be a good fit. If you hate them, then you probably shouldn’t start one yourself. 2. Guest on other people’s podcasts. One of the best ways to try out podcasting is to become a guest on other people’s shows. You’ll get a feel for the experience of podcasting without having to do all the heavy lifting! You’ll also get exposure and grow your brand if you do it well. 3. Learn about podcasting. There are so many ways to learn about podcasting and there are tons of free resources on the internet. But just because someone has a website or is active in a fb group about podcasting does NOT mean that they know what they are talking about. Make sure, in your learning, that you are following someone you trust and someone who is reliable. It really helps if they are actually a podcaster themselves! (Hint: I'd love to be someone you can learn from). She joined me recently on the Christian Woman Business Podcast for a strategy session. One of the things we discussed was whether she should start a podcast. She's had many people ask her if she is going to do one, and she would really love to. But she was struggling with figuring out if this is the right time. My advice? I recommended that she make sure to have some kind of consistent revenue coming into her business to help offset any costs of starting the podcast. She doesn't love the tech side of things, so she may want to hire out some pieces of the podcasting. So having revenue from coaching or some other service might be the best bet before launching a podcast. However, this is not a hard and fast rule; ultimately she needs to decide when the time is right for this endeavor. Have you ever considered starting a podcast? Should You Start a Blog, Podcast, or YouTube Chann Should You Start a Blog, Podcast, or YouTube Channel? Part 4 (i.e. a distraction from the election - ha!!) In my past 3 posts, I've shared about the pros and cons of the 3 main content channels you can use to share your message. But maybe you still aren't sure which one is right for you. A few questions to consider when deciding between blogging, podcasting, or YouTube: • What is your default form of communication? Do you prefer to write things out? Or talk it out verbally? • Are you introverted or extroverted? • Do you love being the center of attention or are you more behind the scenes? • Is grammar and writing a struggle for you or do you love it? • How much time do you have to invest? • Is tech really hard for you or do you pick it up quickly? • What do you prefer consuming? • What does your ideal audience consume? Should You Start a Blog, Podcast, or YouTube Chann Should You Start a Blog, Podcast, or YouTube Channel? Part 3 In our last couple posts, I shared about the pros and cons of blogging and YouTube. Now, let's move on to the 3rd content platform (and my personal favorite), podcasting. There are currently over 1 million podcasts right now, although a much lower number when you consider how many are currently active. But either way, you can see that this platform has the lowest numbers compared to blogging and YouTube. Pros of podcasting: • Medium barrier to entry – a little bit more than blogging but not nearly as intensive as youtube • People can build a very deep relationship with you – you are in their ears and they feel like they know you • Less likely to “skim” or stop listening; most people listen to the majority of an episode rather than stopping (as opposed to blogs and video) • Develops your authority • Can connect with influencers in your niche by inviting them on your podcast Cons of podcasting: • Bigger time investment than blogging (approximately 5-10 hours per episode vs. 2-3 for a blog post) • Really need to be consistent – doesn’t have to be weekly, but consistency is key • Need equipment and some level of tech knowledge, or ability to hire someone else • A lot of moving parts to keep track of – need to have a good system in place to keep things moving Do you have a podcast? Part 2 Choosing whether you want to share your message via a blog, podcast, or video format can be a daunting decision. In Part 1, I shared the pros and cons of blogging. Now let's talk about YouTube! YouTube is a growing and popular platform, and people love consuming video based content. There are currently over 31 million YouTube channels. Pros of YouTube: • Video is an excellent way to build trust with your audience • People enjoy watching; YouTube attracts about 44% of all internet users • Highly searchable content • Can build community on YouTube – commenting and interacting on the videos is very common • Less competition than blogging Cons of YouTube: • Highest barrier to entry – you need video and audio equipment; editing software, and some tech knowledge to start • Takes the most time (i’m guessing, because of the video editing) to do it WELL • People can’t consume videos on the go (i.e. in their car or while jogging) • Can’t be done in your PJs Do you use YouTube? Should You Start a Blog, Podcast, or YouTube Chann Should You Start a Blog, Podcast, or YouTube Channel? Part 1 One of the biggest questions I hear from the women I work with is: “Should I start a blog, a podcast, or a YouTube channel?” And I understand because I had the same question at one point, too. It’s a big decision and there are many factors to figuring out what will be best for you and your business. In this series, I'll share the pros and cons of each platform, and then provide you with some questions to ask to help you decide which is right for you. Let’s start with blogging… it’s the oldest content channel and still the most popular. Contrary to popular belief, blogging is not dead. According to one site, there are over 500 million blogs currently in 2020. Pros of blogging: • Lowest barrier to entry – just need a computer, a website, and an internet connection • Writing is all that is required, and maybe some images • Very searchable; can get ranked using SEO • Lowest cost – nothing else to invest in besides the basics • Least amount of time investment • Can do it in your PJs and no one cares Cons of blogging: • Most competition – because there are more blogs than youtube or podcasts, you have higher competition in terms of keywords, etc. • Can’t consume blogs while doing other things like washing dishes or driving • A lot of people are spending less time reading blogs and a lot of people skim • Can be tough to develop a real relationship with your readers through the blog alone; wil need some kind of additional communication (i.e. email list or FB group) Do you currently have a blog?
